About Us

Kim began working with clocks over twelve years ago when he took up the opportunity to work at the world famous German grandfather and cuckoo clock centre located just north of Toowoomba in south east Queensland. Not long after starting work there, the shop offered a sponsorship to a German clockmaker, Peter to also work at the facility. Peter had over 30 years experience working with watches and clocks in Germany, a Master at his trade. Prior to coming to Australia Peter had been employed at an international training school and a museum.

On his arrival Peter could barely speak English, but he taught Kim from day one. Kim learned much about the workings of clocks and enjoyed working on smaller, lighter and cleaner items. It was a vast change compared to repairing much larger and heavier items encountered whilst previously working as a vehicle mechanic. Peter soon after made the decision to venture out on his own. He set up a very successful business in Toowoomba and recently relocated to the Hinterlands of the Sunshine Coast.

This left Kim the opportunity to take over where Peter had left off. There is still much to learn and Peter has continually been available to offer assistance. Purchasing accurate tools for clockmaking has proven difficult, but it is highly unlikely that between us, there isn’t much that we can’t repair. Kim specialises more in Cuckoo clocks but looks forward to the challenges of all types of clocks.

Most repairs these days are for sentimental reasons. Many of the younger generation don’t appreciate old time pieces due to modern technology. However many older people miss the sound of an old clock their parents or Grandparents may have owned when they were a child.

Second Hand Clocks

Purchasing second hand clocks can be risky. Many people sell them because they no longer work properly, although they insist they do work. Anyone can splash oil on a clock and have it work for five to ten minutes. To repair a clock properly, it has to be dismantled and can take days to be completed and tested. When we repair your clock, you receive two years warranty, but you can certainly expect it to go much longer than that. Incidentally, if you intend buying a second hand clock don’t be afraid to ask our advice. Send a photo. There are some absolute bargains around, but there are big differences in quality. From time to time we may offer second hand cuckoo clocks. We prefer to sell them with warranty so we must ensure they are working properly.

Repairs

Over time we have seen a number of people ‘ripped off’ with their clock repairs. From exorbitant prices, lengthy repair delays, wind up clocks only working for a day or two and no warranty. It is disappointing to explain this to many vulnerable older folk, especially if they saw an advertisement in a reputable newspaper. Our service provides a no obligation free quote and an explanation of any work required. Remember, all major work comes with a two year warranty.

Many clock cases usually require some sort of repairs. Cuckoo clocks are usually happy to have a coat of oil, so long as the woodwork is in a reasonable condition. Other clock cases can be time consuming but we do keep them from looking artificial so they reflect their age. It is entirely the individual customer’s decision.

Famous Icon set to Close

Sadly with the likelihood of the Black Forest clock shop at Cabarlah closing in the not too distant future, Kim will continue to repair any clocks that already have been left there. Any required repairs can now be left directly with him. Depending on your area and the amount of enquiries, we may introduce a pick up and delivery service.

We are trying to come up with a solution to the Black Forest Hill clock shop closing. Unfortunately it would be initially expensive to reopen, but there seems to be still quite a demand for such items. We are also looking at perhaps starting a museum. Any ideas would be appreciated!

At this stage we are just working from home. So much depends on Covid and the future. If you have any clocks you would like repaired properly, please give us a call. Just do one thing, please never throw them out. It may just help us get someone else’s clock working or could be used to start a collectibles museum.  Old clocks always create interest. Some are just amazing and you often wonder about the old engineering skills not to mention the history, which can be quite fascinating.

We have seen many a clock come from being stored away for years in the back shed or an old wardrobe. Everyone is so happy to see them working again. We specialise in bringing back such fond memories to many people. It is an absolute thrill when handing back a fully working valued timepiece.
